Discovering Hong Kong Street Food in Kowloon

Do you eat street food during your travels? I do, only if the food does not frighten me, i.e. definitely no insects and scary looking animal for me, as well as strange looking textures, no please.

If you are looking to sample street food while in Hong Kong, the best place to get them is in Kowloon. Follow the street markets trail—Temple Street Night Market, Ladies Market, Gold Fish Market, Sneakers Street, Apliu Street Flea Market and more, because they tend to congregate and stick close to each other in these places.

Hong Kong Street Food

These collection of street food pictures below I snapped in the surroundings of Mong Kok, Kowloon. The food stalls are practically all over the place.

Because I have a sensitive stomach I will be taking some probiotic tablets for my next exotic location destination so I can eat street food I like. Last year I was food poisoned in the Philippines (ate sea food in a restaurant, ironically not from the streets!).

Deep fried stuff. We have a similar (fast food) snack in the Netherlands called Mexicano, and they really look almost identical to these.

I have no idea what these are. They look like Kimchi though, however, we are not in Korea but Hong Kong. Some pickled vegetable?

Fish balls, love them. Reminds me of my childhood.

This is one slimy and scary looking entrails (tripe) of an animal.

Tea served from large hot kettles into small bowls. People drink them while standing.

The ubiquitous roasted peking duck is as conventional as noodles in Hong Kong. I am also seeing some Siu Yuk (roasted pork belly).

Deep fried calamari rings

Looks like some tripes – intestines wrapped together, fried, then sliced and put into a stick.

Grilled squid tentacles

Soft vanilla ice cream, perfect during a very hot August day.

Gai Daan Jai (Hong Kong eggettes, they are egg-shaped waffles)

Some kind of pastry.

To those who eat at fast food restaurants when travelling, because in one way or another you want to save money and eat fast, let me tell you that street food are a much better option for you. They will not cost you a fortune, are much cheaper than a burger, are served fast and you get to taste something local that will help enrich your visit and experience of the country. Win-win.
