Aside from visiting the cities in Emilia-Romagna (Bologna, Modena and Parma), I managed to do a side trip and spent a day in San Marino, one of the smallest countries in Europe and in the world.
The state is officially called – the Republic of San Marino or Repubblica di San Marino. It claims to be the oldest sovereign state and constitutional republic in the world. Its land size is about 61 km2 and has a population of 32,000+-.
I took a lot of pictures of this little country and I will begin by posting the breathtaking panoramic views taken from the highest point, in the historical centre, Citta di San Marino. You really visit this microstate for the views. They are just awesome. Stunning. I am so glad I came here to visit, even for just a day.
You can see in the map below how small San Marino is. The tiny enclaved state is surrounded by the Emilia-Romagna region in Italy.
Here is the distance between Bologna (my base) and San Marino. It looked like the driving between Bologna and San Marino, at least up to Rimini exit is one big straight highway.
Here are the rest of the breathtaking panoramic views of San Marino taken from the summit, in the historical centre or Citta di San Marino.
This set of shots are facing the northern part of San Marino.
One thing I can tell you, the local residents of San Marino are aggressive drivers! The roads in this mountainous state are zigzaggy but the locals are probably so used to it they can drive blindfolded. I really found them aggressive, overtaking and driving more then 60 km/per hour.
This set below is facing the southern part of the little country.
More soon of San Marino!
