Apple pies or tarts are one of the many popular Dutch pastries in the country. I must have tasted so many apple tarts in my 11+ years of living in the Netherlands that I can almost say I am a skilled apple pie or tart taster.
The Apple Pie by Kuyt and the View at the EYE
Websites: EYE Bar & Restaurant Amsterdam | Patisserie Kuyt
In February I went to the stunning EYE Building in Amsterdam North which is where the EYE Film Museum and the equally stunning EYE Bar & Restaurant are located. I didn’t visit the museum though but had an afternoon snack at the bar restaurant—a glass of fresh mint tea and perhaps one of the best apple pies I have ever tasted in the country.
What makes this apple pie very delicious? It is somewhat crunchy and very tasty, you can savor the sweetness of the pastry but the amount of apples in it sets everything in good balance, so someone like me who is not very fond of sugary stuff does not get turned off with it. There were almonds sprinkled on top as well, powdered sugar and a home-made style whipped cream sealed the deal. In my book this is 4.7 stars out of 5.
EYE Bar & Restaurant does not bake them but orders them from a bakery called Patisserie Kuyt who claims to make the best apple tarts in Amsterdam. On their website they mentioned about garnering awards for their house specialty which is not a surprise, their apple pie! Honestly, after tasting this, I think they do make the best apple pie in the city. I better visit the bakery soon!
Other than the blissful pastry, the venue of EYE Bar & Restaurant is amazing. I love open spaces, floor to ceiling glass windows and a nice view. When it’s beautiful weather the café terraces on the water are open and are a great place to hang out.
No reservations for lunch, but for dinner yes. Because of its informal setting I would suggest lunch here than dinner, and afternoon drinks on the outdoor terrace too.
The EYE building is located across the Het IJ River from Amsterdam Centraal Station. Just hop on a ferry and cross the river and you hop off in front of the EYE building. They have car parking as well which is one of the cheapest in Amsterdam going at 2 euros an hour.
Highly recommended! The venue, the view and the apple tart.
