Every time I visit a new city, I always do a little bit of research beforehand on where the local farmer’s markets are located, and then I schedule a trip to a few that made into my travel agenda.
In Montreal, I found several markets in the city and I have my eyes settled on 2 popular ones, the Jean Talon Market which is the biggest market, and the Atwater Market which I have read several great reviews from the locals. Unfortunately, it is difficult to be in control of everything every time. I wasn’t able to visit Atwater due to a road works detour which delayed my schedule and made it impossible for me to squeeze in this visit to the little time left on my agenda. Helaas. I did however visit the Jean Talon Market.
I was here at the Jean Talon Market together with a good friend Pat who I haven’t seen in YEARS. It’s so nice to see old familiar faces and remember the good old bygone days. I knew Pat from my Cebu days, during my very young, still innocent days, hehe.
When I told her I want to visit Jean Talon Market, her eyes lit up and her face beaming, ‘I will go with you! I have been wanting to go there for years!’
Goodness heavens, the woman has been living for more than 8 years in Montreal and she hasn’t been to the Jean Talon Market?! I am horrified.
But she quickly defended herself, argued even (great comeback I should say) saying that she now has an excellent excuse to go because of me, and because her family as well is going to a potluck party in the next few days and she has promised to bring some corn cubs.
Right, we are going to hunt for some fresh sweet corns. Fine by me. At least we have a goal set for this visit. I will not only be snapping pictures away like crazy, which I always do by the way when I am visiting markets.
It took us a little while to find the corns. Pat did some price comparison and she said that the corns at Jean Talon Market were cheaper, well naturally of course, than the ones at the supermarket. But then again, the corns at the market still have their husks on them, unlike the cleaned ones you can find in the supermarket. It does pay to check the prices alright.
And oh, because Pat was such a charming talker, the fresh sweet corn vendor gave her an extra bag for free! Merci! What a surprise. You don’t really get to experience something like this every day at the markets you know. It must have been Pat’s cute Asian accent when speaking French. Salut, comment allez-vous? =)
We had some coffee at the bakery café and shared a croissant and an flat apple filled pastry. A little shared snack in the morning does not hurt at all, methinks.
Opening hours are: 07:00 and closes 18:00 (Mon, Tue, Wed, Sat), 20:00 (Thu, Fri) and 17:00 (Sun).
Parking is located underground and is very cheap. You pay $0.50 for the first 30 minutes, $1.50 for 60 minutes and $2.00 for 90 minutes. Not bad at all.
