Madrid: Visiting Plaza Mayor once again and a Farewell Lunch in San Miguel Mercado

It was time to do our one last minute shopping at El Corte Ingles, the biggest department store in Spain. I wanted to bring home preserved seafood, i.e. squids, shrimps, mussels and tuna. I was also thinking of bringing home my favourite boquerones but all of them were cooled, refrigerated and with the hot summer temperature it’s going to become stale so I decided to stick to the canned preserved goods.

Then we went back to San Miguel Mercado for our farewell very late lunch slash snack combination. It was past 3PM already.

I love Spanish food.

We ordered ‘Tinto de Verano’, a popular summer wine concoction in Spain for drinks, and some anchovies with olives and pepper, and olives with octopus for starters—5 stars out of 5, as usual. My main was prawns and mussels in paprika and onions—4 stars. I totally forgot what Blondine had.

Blondine was joking around with me that I have a blushing cheek. Sometimes I get red from alcohol, not all the time though, but at this moment, I do have a blushing cheek, haha!

Blushing cheek from the alcohol, haha!

Yummy lunch of mix seafood, mussels, praws and squid cooked with paprika.

Here are some more of the pictures I took in Mercade de San Miguel:

Working the jamon leg. I love jamons.

I was tempted to buy this risotto pack.

And here is one last look at Plaza Mayor… we just had to walk across this grand square one last time before we tread back to the hotel.

In Plaza Mayor you can find many restaurants and most of them have a glass display like this displaying the day’s menu with the real sample.

Then we are off to the hotel on Calle Atocha to get our bags. We are flying before 7PM so we arrive in Amsterdam not too late. Just good timing.

To our surprise, the cab driver who picked us up at the hotel was a woman. She was on her phone the whole time, she came across more a business woman than a cab driver to me, lol. It is actually rare to find a woman cab driver because this profession can be dangerous especially during the evening service. The lady cab driver of course knows the risks involved in this kind of job. She has everything covered, just look at the protection she has in her cab:

Plastic protection for the driver’s seat. She has her own little kiosk, cute.

This thing had me perplexed and just today while looking again at this foto, I realized that the driver must have been using the PVC tube for acoustics, so she can hear audibly hear the passengers. Smart?

Cool huh? This is the first time I have seen a cab protection for the driver like this.

Anywho, we are now at the Barajas Madrid Airport and boarding. Bye-bye Madrid! Farewell. See you again, soon, in the future.
