Finally in Malaga, Andalucia—Sardinas al Espeto! (and Torta de Patatas)

For this holiday, I am ordering every night different Andalucian or Spanish culinary specialty, which is usually seafood. The goal is to stay away from any food that is not Spanish related. I will be featuring the dishes and special mention the restaurant that garnered 4 and 5 stars appraisal from me and the rest that didn’t, I will lump the dishes into one entry.

Here you go! Served: grilled sardinas and a lemon squeeze. A serving is usually seven pieces. Judgment: they were good but would have been perfect if the sardines stayed a few more minutes on the grill. I like them a bit burnt.

In my previous entry—‘Grill me some sardines please…’ I mentioned that I have yet to order this typical Andalusian fare. Well, I finally decided to have my sardines at this beach restaurant, Restaurante La Paella in Torremolinos on Playa del Bajondillo. It looks like paella is their specialty, but like most restaurants, paellas here are served for two persons and helaas the Dutchman doesn’t eat anything from the sea (he is so missing a lot in life).

The sardines should have stayed a bit longer on the grill and one of the waiters took my plate even when I wasn’t finished. Not done! But I forgive him because the one who attended us was very nice and service oriented.

I would rate the food, as well as our dining experience 4 stars out of 5.

In Spain they automatically serve you bread (you pay for this as part of ‘cubiertos’ on the tab) and many restaurants offer free olives as well. A liter of Sangria for Dutchman and I while waiting for our food. This sangria is very good.

The grilling corner of the restaurant. Normally sardines are skewered but this restaurant is doing it differently. Grilled sardines are often called ‘Sardinas al Espeto’ by the locals but the phrase literally means ‘skewered sardines’ and these sardines may probably not apply as they weren’t fastened on a stick when but does that really matter?

Torta de Patatas (potato omelette) as our side dish. No foto of Dutchman’s dish and I also cannot remember what he had, definitely nothing Spanish at all.

Our coffee experience in Spain was top; the Spaniards know their coffee well. Restaurante Le Paella, already 4 decades in service. Restaurant signage on ceramic tiles (reflecting the Andalucian decor influence) are very popular in most restaurants in the costa.

I took a foto of their fresh seafood bar and this is what they have available.
