Coffee Time at The College Hotel in Amsterdam

The College Hotel is a newly opened boutique hotel located in Amsterdam Oud-Zuid with a restaurant, a charming garden terrace and an intimate lounge bar. This property is very conducive for meetings and serious talks, both for business and private. The boutique hotel is like a secret plush place where you can spend an afternoon or evening with a friend/s or your lover over drinks and you will not even notice the clock ticking away.

Blondine and I came here for a cup of coffee and to catch up with each other. We settled in the lounge bar because it is cold to be sitting at the outdoor terrace (it was not open anyway). It is October so many terraces in the Netherlands are closed, although in busy areas such as in the city centre, they are still open.

I am having Irish Coffee and Blondine her usual Capuccino. I am not sure if these are Delft Blue porcelain (did not check) but they sure are inspired by it. Delft is a little city/town in the South Holland province and is famous for this type of porcelain works.

There is a little garden terrace beside the lounge bar and a much bigger terrace on the other side.

Here is a little bit of history:

My hunches were correct, the building was once a school called H.B.S. in 1895. I love it when old historical buildings are transformed into something that serves a much greater public. But the times gone by doesn’t stop there really, because today the hotel and restaurant operates as an on-the-job-training facility for many students in the Horeca (hotel, restaurants, café) branch. This is quite special and very noble for the hotel to follow the purpose of its origins.

The design and atmosphere of the hotel brings to mind the Conservatorium Hotel, also located in Amsterdam near the Museum Square. It must have been the bricks and the arched hallways, the renowned Brick Gothic/Renaissance Architecture of Northern Europe.

The toilet is quite impressive, dainty and princessy.

This is the outdoor terrace which is open (and very cosy!) during summer. October is not a warm enough month to sit outside though.

A fresco sculpture on the wall states: 1 May 1899 – 20 Nov 1913, Learn from your friend (Leer van uw vriend), which is a plaque of commemmoration to ALJ Bouten, then headmaster and school director.

This is why I love the newer boutique hotels in Europe than the usual 5-star chain hotels. As you step inside the property, you breathe-in design, ambiance and (preserved) history.
