Local Food Market at Wat Pho Temple in Bangkok, Thailand

Well I had a little surprise during my visit to the Wat Pho Temple, also known as the Temple of the Reclining Buddha.

Just as I was checking out the outdoor courtyards of the temple’s complex I ran into an open-air food market. Nice! You know I am crazy about food markets. In some of my travels I literally plan my agenda around visiting culinary markets. So I was quite thrilled to have come across this. I quickly checked out the food vendors and what they have on offer. Hmm, what can I buy?

My parents and I just had our late lunch of Thai spring rolls and sticky mango rice so we were quite full already. I do not think we have enough room left in our stomachs for a snack so I need to choose something that we can easily bring and eat for later.

I then spotted a guy making a thick sauce for the popcorn on a wok. He was giving me an inviting grin and saying I should try it. It is not sweet caramel but a local version with sweet and spicy spices. The aromatic smell was quite intriguing so I lingered and watched him make a batch. I thought that since the popcorn is packaged in a plastic, my parents and I can definitely eat this another time. So I bought a pack.

There was also an ongoing River Festival so the  temples and entertainment areas near the Chao Phraya River have some complementary events going on. Here at Wat Pho Temple I noticed a stage platform with an audio visual, stage props and balloons. There might be an entertainment program later in the evening. I do not think my parents and I can wait for this.We are going somewhere else.

Khao Lam: Sticky rice with red beans in a bamboo stick.

Khanom Loop Choup: These are fruit shaped mung beans. They are popular Thai desserts, look like fruit jellies but definitely taste differently!

Miang Khum: It is a traditional Thai starter which consists of chillies, limes, coconut, dried shrimps, peanuts, ginger, peanuts and palm suger sauce wrapped in betel leaves. I loved this, I had this for starter on our last night’s dinner in the city.

Khanom Klouy: Sugar-boiled banana puree wrapped in banana leaves.

This looks like some sweet green sticky rice balls with mung bean paste.

Thai popcorn. I think its called Pad Thai popcorn? It surely is not sweet caramel, its a combination, an explosion of sweet, salty and spicy  flavours =)

Laab Moo Tod: Deep fried spicy minced pork skewer.

I have no idea what this is but it looks like a crunchy and sweet local delicacy.

More delicacies here and fruity ice cream to help quench the hotness of the day. An ice cream is always a good idea in the tropics.

Khao kriab pak mor: Steamed rice-skin dumplings. It usually has some filling such as minced pork. The wrapped skin is made from glutinous rice and are flavoured and coloured in pandan (green) and from a local flower (violet).
