Stunning University of Debrecen (Debreceni Egyetem) in Hungary

Universities in Europe are a treasure find. Most of the buildings and campuses are so beautiful and steeped rich in history.

Debrecen University in eastern Hungary is established in 1538 and is the oldest institution of higher education in the country. It has about 32,000 students, approximately 4,000 of which are international students.

A gorgeous attraction outside the city of Debrecen is the University of Debrecen. The school is not that far away from the city centre really especially if you don’t mind walking for half an hour. There are trams as well that ply the city centre to-fro university route. I drove here so that was a quick and easy one for me.

The bartender I spoke to with at the Malom Hotel Bar & Restaurant (this is where I stayed at) spoke highly of the university. He said I need to see it if I am into art, architecture, culture and all that kind of jazz. I did a quick images google search online and voila, I was totally impressed with what I saw. I have got to visit this lovely university! Well, I did. On my last day in Debrecen.

Here is the website: Debrecen University

I wanted to stop by at the beautiful and classical library as well, which looked a bit similar to the library of the Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland by the way, however, it was a Sunday when I visited, so the library was locked.

Personally speaking, I am not the studious—bookish type of person in school. Although I did read the whole Nancy Drew series back in grade school if that counts? I disliked studying. I hated the repetition game. I prefer learning through experience and I cannot keep my concentration on one subject for a long time. So yes, I have a problem learning the traditional way.

In fact, I am surprised I managed to get a diploma, haha. Well, thankfully, that is a confirmation that I don’t have half a brain. *sigh of relief*

So yes, my hats off to you people out there who are study heroes!

I also would like to add that, although I despised studying I cannot stress this more than enough that the education I had really helped build the foundation for me. I don’t think I would have had much success in my career and with my life here in the Netherlands if I didn’t have the right training. Of course, personality, character, ambition and attitude are equally important elements in the formula, but without the basic foundation (read: education), polishing myself would have been a very difficult task and would have taken much, much longer.

The Pepe Panini Cafe inside the Debrecen University campus.

Well maintained gardens and fountains in the front yard of the university.

The University Church and the Pepe Panini Cafe beside it. The university and church are founded on Calvinist values and beliefs.

Someone was brave and quite stylish enough to leave his or her bicycle on the front doorsteps of the university. Cool.

I just had to say a big WOW when I entered the building and saw this. This is the big inner courtyard of the main university building.

There are approximately 4,000 international students enrolled in the University of Debrecen.

I would not mind studying here again with this kind of architecture to welcome me everyday. Well, maybe just a week of studying will do =)

Very impressive. As you can see I managed to go all the way up to the highest floor to take this picture. It was a Sunday when I was there and these students, many of them are international students living in dormitories are studying here in the hallways and corridors.

Although I must say that students these days have it easier with technology. Before we did not have internet but encyclopedias for research and reference. My parents still have the set of leather bound Colliers Encyclopedia =)

I am liking the geometrical patterns here on the floor.

Sundays at the University of Debrecen is spent studying on hallways and corridors.

Ah, I am not the only tourist in town.
