Grote Markt, Mechelen

The main square or ‘Grote Markt’ in Mechelen is probably the main attraction of this medieval city. Nobody can miss this square when in Mechelen. It’s a place to people watch, hang-out and wine and dine.

It is also a great place to admire the Belgian architecture. Preserved old guild houses in renaissance, baroque and rococo styles, the St. Romboutskathedral (St. Rumbold’s Cathedral) and the Mechelen City Hall.

Famous inhabitants of Mechelen are:

~ Anne Boleyn, one of the 6 wives of King Henry VIII of England who was beheaded
~ Charles V, the Holy Roman Emperor
~ English poet, John Heywood
~ Margaret of York, Dutchess of Burgundy
~ Margaret of Austria, daughter of Maximilian I—the Holy Roman Emperor
