If there is Mercado de San Miguel in Madrid, there is Ostermalms Saluhall in Stockholm! Ostermalms Saluhall opened its doors in 1888. It is a gourmet food court with market stalls, restaurants and bar cafes.
I learned about the Ostermalms Saluhall while researching on Stockholm before the trip and I am really excited to visit the place. I knew this would be one of the highlights in my Stockholm short visit. My goal is to have lunch here so after a busy morning of shopping in Norrmalm District and discovering local Swedish designers, I was ready to go.
Upon arriving I was whisked away by the stream of energy that the market hall generates. Gastronomic adventure; its buzzing here! The gallery is full of pretty stalls selling delectable foods with preserved deer heads and Swedish flags flying above it. There are as well a good number of cosy restaurants and bar cafes to entertain the palates of gourmet critics onsite. I could not stop clicking my camera of course. This is gastronomic window shopping, literally. I just love places like these!
Food sold and served here are not just limited to Swedish or Nordic/Scandinavian variety. In fact the selection is very international. I saw Italian and Asian inspired culinary delights.
A visit to Ostermalms Saluhall is a MUST if you ever find yourself in Stockholm. See below my fotos. The Ostermalms District is by the way a wealthy area of Stockholm. There are a number of embassies located here.
The Ostermalms Saluhall has a very nationalistic theme: Swedish flags and deer heads with spiky horns!
Pickled herring is typical Swedish fish delicacy. In the Netherlands, the Dutch eat the herring raw with chopped onions. The Swedish like them pickled with onions and herbs.
Ahhhhhhh, I am sure I have made you hungry again with the fotos. So my next entry will be my lunch. I am looking at ordering something local, perhaps seafood. Mmmm…
