Staying in a Century-Old Art Nouveau Chateau in Helsinki: Glo Hotel Art

For my stay in Helsinki I found this interesting hotel which is a cross between many things I like: design, history, castle, architecture, contemporary and comfort. Helsinki is the city with a large concentration of Art Nouveau architecture in Finnish National Romanticism style, thus I was really taken when I saw this art nouveau castle that is 100 years old converted into a hotel. The location was perfect in the city centre as well, right in the middle of the Design District.

I think I had the Glo Comfort M room which is just good enough for me. I like to be able to move a bit in the room so space is important. I do not need luxury as long as I am comfortable.

My favourite thing in this hotel during my stay? The lovely firm bed and the soft pillows, as well as the huge rain shower in the bathroom. I cannot deny as well that the light design under the bed is brilliant. It gives you the illusion that you are floating in heaven.

What can I say I really had a super comfortable stay here.

I forgot to take a picture of the rain shower head. When we move to the south of Europe (that is when we retire, and yes at my age all you start to think is retirement) I want a rain shower installed in my bathroom.

This is a very comfortable room with my own work desk and lounge chair with ottoman.

Love all the glass walls. I do not mind the personalised welcome but it is appreciated.

The lobby reception of the hotel.

Beautiful art nouveau architecture interior designed with vaulted ceilings and worked with gorgeous graphic paintings.

This is the sitting and TV room of the hotel.

The main entrance door of the hotel. The hotel also has a restaurant called Glo Hotel Art Restaurant located in the cellar.

The hotel annex where the rooms are located is divided by the parking gateway. You need your hotel key to access everything here. Technically, the rooms are not located inside the historical castle, only the reception, lounge bar, sitting area, restaurant and a few facilities.

Breakfast was not part of the package and I thought its best that I take my breakfasts/brunches outside where I get to experience and see more of the city, such as at the Hietalahti Market Hall, Café Regatta in the seaside marina and Kappeli at the Esplanadi Park.

On my last night however I was not really in the mood to eat at a restaurant. I remember that the lobby lounge bar serves what they call ‘Glo Art Bites’ which are actually tapas, or rather, small servings of food. I did not have a huge appetite that night so after a long day out, I went back to the hotel to unwind in the lounge bar, have my glass of red, some Glo Art Bites and a nice relaxing read.

There is also a restaurant at the hotel called Glo Art Hotel Restaurant but like I said I was not in the mood to sit in a restaurant. I prefer a slow and casual evening at the lounge bar.

The night before I had ‘Reindeer Rump Steak’ at Saaga Restaurant which was very tasty and an interesting experience altogether as well because the restaurant was designed in Lappish style. A little piece of Lapland in the capital wasn’t all that bad.

The lobby lounge bar. It was quiet, just what I ordered for the evening. Some days and nights I prefer to be alone than sitting in a very busy cafe, bar and restaurant. It comes with the age you know.

I picked the three bites and ordered a glass of red.

My light dinner bites: Prawns marinated with chili and garlic, Parma ham, grilled artichokes and a side bread with tapenade.

And some dose of travel reading as well.

A very comfortable design and historical hotel right in the city centre. I am a happy customer.
