Belgrade (Beograd) Evening Walk

These are the photos I took from my first night’s evening walk in Beograd (Belgrade).

I right away hit the main pedestrian shopping street of the city, Knez Mihailova and discovered the lively outdoor cafe terrace scene.

Then I pressed on walking, following the crowds which led me to a park. I then realised that I have arrived at the Kalemegdan Fortress. By this time the sun has gone down and the street and building lights have started flickering against the sudden nightfall. It was beautiful to see the city lights from the fortress which is overlooking the Danube and Sava Rivers, the Brankov Bridge and the newer part of Belgrade – New Belgrade.

Beograd is a big city. Did you know that Belgrade was the capital of the now defunct socialist country, Yoguslavia?

I told myself to come back here at the fortress during the day. It was also beginning to drizzle a bit and luckily I managed to take shelter under the trees whilst enjoying the panoramic view of the city and the skyline lights before me.

I didn’t really walked too far away from the city centre. I just wanted to get my bearings around the centrum, knowing where the main sights and streets are located and how far they are from my hotel. It was getting dark so I went back to the main pedestrian street to search for the restaurant I had in mind.

The hotel apartment I booked at Terazije was luxurious. I loved the tall ceiling and the French windows that look down to the buildings flanking on both sides of Terazije avenue. I thought of spending some time in bed surfing online and watching TV, so if I want to retire early I need to have dinner now.

After walking the length of Knez Mihailova, turning left to the Republic Square and passing by the National Theatre, I arrived at the restaurant – the Little Bay restaurant which offers food + opera music in an opera theatre setting. The walk back to the hotel apartment after dinner was quick. This is what I love about booking a hotel right in the smack of the city centre. I am near to everything. It also gives me the feeling of safety, especially that I am a lady travelling alone.

The last few hours of the night was spent having coffee while surfing on the net and watching TV. Did I mention that I tend to scroll local channels and just watch randomly, even if I do not understand a single thing?

Bakery around the corner from my hotel apartment. I always find it interesting to see what kind of bread and pastries the locals eat.

This is Knez Mihailova – main shopping and pedestrian street of Belgrade. Locals, visitors and tourists meet here. This is the heart of the city.

Like any city, artists and painters are welcome to paint and showcase their art here in the busiest (pedestrian) street of the city.

The “Sahat Kula” (clock tower) is one of the historical points you will encounter upon entering the grounds of the Kalemegdan Fortress.

I almost booked this hotel on Knez Mihailova. Unfortunately, it did not have easy access to parking so I let it slip by.

Boutique is one of the popular cafes in the city centre. It is March, still winter, but Serbians like to sit outside. I noticed that this is an Eastern European thing.

Going to the underground passage. The infrastructure here in Belgrade badly needs a facelift.

Popcorn is a popular street food in Belgrade (as well in Novi Sad).
