Because Old Town Porvoo is preserved by the Finnish government in order to retain its history, architecture, cobbled streets and character of the village, they built a newer Porvoo in 1997 on the other side of the river, in the eastern bank just across the main road and bridge.
Porvoo New Town
The modern day Porvoo is where most people live, where they buy their food supplies at the supermarket, eat at fastfood restaurants and catch the bus to another town or to Helsinki. This is the west bank of Porvoo, where the future of the town hangs on to.
I managed to do a little stroll here as well, just along the river and on the main roads near the city centre and bus station. The town is not very busy, it supports the laid back lifestyle and there hangs an air of distinct country feel. Coming from relatively busy and bigger cities in the last few days, Tallinn and Helsinki, Porvoo was a breath of fresh air for this last leg of my Finland and Estonia journey last May. I am away from the crowds here.
I have always been a city girl and sometimes I wonder if I can live in a slow-paced place like Porvoo. Perhaps it goes well with the inevitable changes we all go through in life. As we age we seek more the silence amidst the chaos of life.
