A Discerning Cruise Port Guide to Exploring Ålesund Independently

Alesund from Fjellstua Viewpoint

One Day in Ålesund Cruise Port: Art Nouveau, Mount Aksla, & Local Bites

Ålesund is hands-down one of the most beautiful towns in Norway, famous for its unique Art Nouveau architecture. I had been wanting to visit this picturesque destination for a long time, especially since KLM offers a convenient direct flight from Amsterdam. When our Holland America MS Rotterdam cruise finally docked here in July, we skipped the structured excursions and spent a perfect day exploring the town’s hidden gems, hiking for views, and snacking on fresh local seafood.

Exploring this beautiful town entirely at our own pace made the day feel incredibly special, completely living up to my long-held expectations. Here is exactly how we spent our independent Alesund cruise port day.

Exploring the Harbour & A Hidden Vintage Cafe Find

We started our day with a leisurely walk around the city centre and the picturesque small harbour, capturing views of the Molja Fyr lighthouse which is a unique, single-room hotel managed by the nearby Hotel Brosundet. While wandering the side streets, we stumbled upon a charming vintage, second-hand cafe shop called Trankokeriet Antikk. It was the perfect local find, and I even managed to score some beautiful, unique vintage jewellery to take home as a souvenir.

From there, we went to explore the Aspøya area. Walking through the neighborhood, we noticed that many of the wooden colourful houses seemed to be lagging in paint maintenance. It felt a bit unexpected. Norway is one of the wealthiest countries in the world, and that reputation had given us a different expectation. We assumed that the harsh coastal weather and high maintenance costs might be the reason why homeowners don’t repaint quite as often as we imagined.

💡Did you know that Ålesund’s 150-year-old Molja Fyr (red) lighthouse now operates as Room 47, a unique waterfront hotel room managed by Hotel Brosundet? Guests can wake up directly at the harbor entrance with the sea as their closest neighbor and endless water views.

Afterwards, we walked around the Ålesundet canal area in the heart of the city centre. This spot offers a stunning, picture-perfect view of the town, framed by vibrant Art Nouveau buildings and lively cafe terraces and boat restaurants perched right along the water.

📊 Ålesund History Quick Fact: In January 1904, a catastrophic fire destroyed nearly the entire town of Ålesund, leaving 10,000 people homeless. The town was completely rebuilt over the next three years in the uniform Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) architectural style, utilising stone and brick instead of wood to prevent future disasters, giving the town its distinctive, elegant aesthetic today.

Hiking Up Mount Aksla to Fjellstua Viewpoint

No trip to Ålesund is complete without tackling the famous stairs to Mount Aksla. We hiked all the way up the 418 steps from the town park to the Fjellstua viewpoint. Since we had glorious, sunny weather, the panoramic view of the town, the surrounding islands, and our cruise ship resting below was spectacular. We sat on a massive rock at the top, feeling the wind on our faces as we bathed in the breathtaking scenery. Sometimes you just have to pause for a moment to appreciate how beautifully nature blends with human design. After taking it all in, we rewarded ourselves with refreshing drinks at the café before hiking back down.

📊 Mount Aksla & Fjellstua Quick Facts:

  • The Ascent: The 418-step staircase path starts in the town park (Byparken) and includes several viewing platforms along the way to stop and rest.
  • The Elevation: The summit sits 130 meters (426 feet) above sea level, offering a complete birds-eye perspective of the region’s complex archipelago.
  • The Venue: The iconic Fjellstua vantage point has welcomed travellers since 1903, featuring a glass-enclosed restaurant and outdoor viewing platform built directly into the mountain cliff.

Shopping for Nordic Treasures & Fresh Cod in the Harbour

Back on street level, we headed to the main shopping district, the area around Kongens gate. I had a specific wish list of authentic Nordic items I wanted to buy, and I finally found the Arctic Seaweed Salt from Lofoten Seaweed at Delicatessen Løvenvold inside the Ålesund Storsenter! I had actually first discovered this unique salt while visiting a brocante market in the Netherlands, where a stall happened to be selling Nordic gourmet products. Ever since buying the special salt, which has now been entirely consumed , I knew I had to track it down on this trip, and finding it in Ålesund was the perfect shopping highlight.

After a bit of more window shopping, we walked down to Jafs Brokiosken, a small fish spot located on Lorkenestorget right on the Ålesundet canal. We bought fresh cod fish for a late-afternoon lunch snack—you cannot get fresher seafood than right off the docks in Ålesund! Sitting there, we enjoyed great views of the water and the surrounding architecture before soaking in the town’s atmosphere for the rest of the afternoon.

After a wonderful day of exploring, shopping, and tasting local flavours, we walked back to the MS Rotterdam just in time for our end of the day departure. As the ship gently pulled away from the pier, we stood out on deck to watch the unique Art Nouveau skyline of Ålesund fade into the horizon.
