Ljubljana Central Market: PogaÄarjev Gourmet Market

This is probably the highlight of my trip to Ljubljana last March—the visit to the Central Market which is one of the busy hubs in the city centre that just bubbles up with so much life, spirit, colours and flavours.

Outdoor terraces side by side at the gourmet market.

The Central Market is huge and is comprised of several markets and these are the Vodnikov square market (produce market), the Pogacarjev square market (gourmet market), the Dolnicarjeva ulica flower market and Plecnik’s covered markets (fresh meat and fish, bakeries, delicatessen shops).

I posted a previous entry about the produce and flower market here: Ljubljana Central Market: Vodnikov Square (Vegetable & Fruit Market) & DolniÄarjeva Street (Flower Market)

For this entry, I am posting pictures of the PogaÄarjev market which is my favourite because here you can find vendors selling all types of local gourmet products. I really feasted here. I found one of my best food finds at this market: Truffle Ghee or TartuGhee

Ghee is originally an Indian food condiment product, a clarified butter and in Slovenia they take this delicious fatty thing to a gourmet level by mixing it with truffle. Simply delicious. I wish I bought a few more bottles.

Interestingly, ghee is heavily used in Ayurvedic medicine.

The other food item I discovered in Slovenia was the pumpkin seed oil, go here: Dinner at Julija: Pasta Truffle and My Disovery of Pumpkin Seed Oil

Moreover, the thing that I loved about this part of the market are the outdoor café terraces. Just the perfect place to drink a cup of coffee whilst people watching after a morning of market shopping. When you visit Ljubljana don’t miss the open-air gourmet market on PogaÄarjev Trg. It is open daily except Sundays.

Lots of dried mushrooms for sale in Ljubljana.

Ghee clarified butter.

Smoked and air dried meat products and sausages, always popular in Europe. Each country has its own version.

Yup, pig, er I mean swine. The preserved head make us humans look so primitive and barbaric with our food choices.

Slovenian honey biscuits. They remind me of the biscuits in Dinant, Belgium.

Another typical Slovenian cake–Potica cake. Other countries in Eastern Europe have their own versions as well.

The outdoor cafe terraces on the colonnaded gallery of the PleÄnik’s covered market halls.

Honey, jam and other canned gourmet products.

Pokrita Trznica, one of the covered market halls.

Wouldn’t this be your favourite place? =)

Time for some market coffee break. Cappuccino.

PogaÄarjev Gourmet Market and Plecnik’s colonnaded covered market.

Bought some sausage with truffle as well.

Three types of ghee butter: original (great for cooking by the way but also as butter on bread), sesame seed ghee and truffle ghee.

I bought all three types of ghee but this my favourite, truffle ghee or TartuGhee.

You have to try the TartuGhee when in Ljubljana.
