El Chocolate con Churros y Porra breakfast in Madrid

For breakfasts I’ve only had hot chocolate with churros and/or porra in Madrid. They are fried doughnuts, not really the healthiest breakfast there is in the world but I am in Spain, I am in Madrid and Madrilenos love to eat this for breakfast. So might as well join in.

First day breakfast in Madrid

My first churros breakfast for this trip was at Plaza Mayor while Blondine had a French toast. We arrived just in time for a nice Madrileno breakfast. This breakfast was a bit incomplete though because the cafe did not have the hot thick chocolate.

Second day breakfast in Madrid

I had churros and hot (thick) chocolate breakfast at a nice café on Paseo del Prado. Blondine had the pan tostada (with tomatoes) and I also shared with her my churros as well. The fresh orange squeeze juice was really nice, a must drink when its super warm (like today in NL, 25C, I finished 2 glasses in Utrecht while shopping!)

Our café was nicely situated in a small square facing Paseo del Prado and the botanical gardens (Real Jardin Botanico) of Retiro. The plan for the day is to stroll on Retiro park for a few hours. It was a Sunday so lots of locals come to the Retiro Park. Afterwards, we board the train to Toledo.

Third day breakfast in Madrid

With 2 churros breakfast in my belt already I decided to have some variation, the Porra with a hot chocolate drink (this is not the thick chocolate). We had breakfast in the Sol district near Plaza Mayor.

Can you see the difference between a churro and a porra now? Porras do not have knots and they are usually bigger.

Fourth day breakfast in Madrid

For our last day in the city, I had churros and hot (thick) chocolate again at a chocolateria caféteria corner Calle de Atocha. Yummy. I was a bit sad that this is my last chocolate con churro breakfast for a long time. Blondine had some cinnamon bread and I also shared with her some of my churros.

Interestingly, a gypsy woman approached our table. She stared at me for a long time and rambled on in undistinguishable Spanish. All I can grasp from the words she said was ‘guapa’. It was evident that she wanted to do a palm reading on me. I don’t really entertain these kind of vendors offering services but sometimes I can’t help and wonder what it would be like to be in their shoes.
