The River Avon in Bath, England

After checking out the Pulteney Bridge and having coffee at the Riverside Café, which is located just under the bridge with spectacular views of the river and the weir, I went for a little walk on the river boulevard.

I found out that the name of the river is Avon—the River Avon. I can’t help but think about Avon in the 1970’s, the body, hair and cosmetics company. It should have been the last thing on my mind, but then again this is a great testimony of the power of branding and advertising.

I didn’t want to associate both into the same picture but I just can’t help it. When I was child it was the most popular, well besides Tupperware and Electrolux, brand sold through door-to-door sales people and networking parties in the Philippines. I was too young to buy make-up and body products anyway but the brand is everywhere. It has in fact reached pandemic proportions in the country that up to some point you would think the products were so ordinary. There really was no way of escaping Avon, because someone in the family or a friend is already selling it or have just bought an item! My nanny was even using it. I think one of its perfumes. So whilst walking the boulevard of the River Avon, I tried to erase all the Avon brand history in my childhood days in my head.

So yeah. Avon is actually a river. It’s not a cosmetic brand. It is a beautiful river flowing through the Somerset countryside in England. What a revelation! *smirk*

I did a little research though and found out that the founder of Avon Products visited Shakespeare’s home on Stratford-upon-Avon in England and was so taken by the beauty of the countryside. When he came back to the US he created an Avon line and a decade later he changed the name of the company to Avon Products. Now that is interesting. I think I should visit Stratford-upon-Avon sometime =)

Stratford-upon-Avon lies on the same river—the River Avon as Bath. It is located north of Bath just before reaching Coventry.

The well-manicured and well-maintained Parade Gardens on the River Avon just below North Parade and Grand Parade roads. I think you must pay in order to get in? Strange.

The North Parade Bridge crossing the River Avon.

The English cold and grey weather can be depressing, but I am used to it. The Dutch weather is exactly the same, maybe just a bit windier.

Serene pockets of the River Avon. That is the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church.
