Apple strudel or apfelstrudel is actually an Austrian cuisine but largely adopted and baked all throughout Germany and German-speaking countries. The delicious pastry became popular during the Habsburg (Austro-Hungarian) Empire. I can still remember eating a lovely version of apfelstrudel with warm vanilla sauce years ago in a restaurant in Hanover while waiting for my train going back to the Netherlands.
So of course when in Germany, we have to eat like the Germans, thus apfelstrudel for lunch!
Café Kleimann
Website: Café Kleimann
We found this restaurant café and bakery shop called Café Kleimann on Prinzipalmarkt right across the gothic St. Lambert’s Cathedral. It is housed in a beautiful building with red window shutters that are particularly found only in the Netherlands. The building stands out on Prinzipalmarkt mainly because it doesn’t look like the rest of the historical houses on the lane. I guess this is what attracted us to pop inside and look for a table.
The restaurant café was super busy! We had to go through a sea of bodies until we found ourselves standing on the hallway that led to another section of the building. Interestingly, the restaurant café is divided into salons. The Dutch sisters were quick enough to get 2 tables for the group in the nice cosy little room at the back called the Blue Saloon. It’s an elegant place with a traditional charm. Funnily, the seats were bouncy. The salon reminds me of an English manor and that we are about to have high tea, instead, we are going to have the German version of coffee with apfelstrudel.
Apple Studel and warm Vanilla Sauce
I will let you in a secret, I actually didn’t order apple strudel. I wasn’t in the mood to eat anything sweet but I did taste the warm vanilla sauce. It was good but not for me. What I really wanted to eat for lunch was a bratwurst or krakauer (they are both sausages). Can’t wait!
