The Houses along River Onyar in Girona, Spain

Mediterranean Houses along River Onyar

The pastel coloured picturesque houses along the river, the foot bridges that separates the old and new town and the River Onyar itself are the emblematic symbol of Girona. Even though some of the houses are a bit run-down and scruffy looking, they have a perennial charm and characteristic about them that you just cannot resist.

Oftentimes is Girona overlooked by its bigger and popular sister Barcelona and its neighbouring coastal and beach resort areas. Many city tourists and resort holidaymakers come here though on a day trip, often lured by the photographic panorama of the houses along the river.

I was here last year in November and I had the pleasure of enjoying a very light Catalan autumn with lots of sunshine so I took the opportunity in taking pictures of this famous spot and representation of the city.

Girona is definitely a city worth checking out. It is very charming, cosy and laid back here. The city can easily be used as a base for exploring nearby towns and villages in the Girona Province (Girona City is the capital of its namesake province) which is exactly what I did during this trip.

Yep, a very sunny November in Girona, Spain. I am happy.

The Gomez or Princess Bridge, one of the 5 pedestrian bridges on the River Onyar in the core centre of Girona.

This is what they call  mediterranean shabby chic style, well perhaps.

This is facing the old town part of Girona centre where the Jewish neighbourhood is located.

The red Eiffel Bridge (Pont de Ferro) and the Girona Cathedral. Trivia: Did you know that the architect of this bridge is Gustav Eiffel, the architect of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France?

Another picture of moi standing on the Eiffel Bridge on a different sunny day in Girona.

The white house on the left is the Casa Maso (House of Rafael Maso, an important architect from Girona) and is the only house along the river that is open to the public.

The mediterranean colours and rustic charm.

Hanging laundry is a usual sight in densely populated urban cities in the mediterranean. Because of the abundance of sunshine they do not need a dryer (like we do in the north) and hanging them from the window is the best location to catch those sunrays.

If not the laundry hanging from the window or balcony, it is the Catalan flag.

You can see the tower of the Collegiate Church of Sant Feliu.
