Singapore Marina Bay Waterfront: Hawker Dinner at Satay by the Bay

Singapore is ‘hawker’ country. If you don’t know what hawker is then its time to hit your google browser =)

Satay by the Bay

Satay by the Bay last November 2015, decorated for the holiday season.

When I am visiting Singapore I like to eat at the hawker centres. I don’t have a favourite so far but my wish is to visit all the best and popular hawker places in the country. They offer delicious, very affordable food in a great local neighbourhood setting.

Some hawker centres though are more upscale in terms of ambiance than the others, and I say this mainly because of their locations. Such as the al fresco setting at the Makansutra Gluttons Bay with spectacular views of the Marina Bay skyline and Lau Pa Sat in a historical building on Raffles Quay in the heart of Central Singapore. These places are must visits if you are in Singapore and if you haven’t been!

Now one of the recently opened hawker places in an upscale environment last year was the “Satay by the Bay†at the Gardens by the Bay in the Marina Bay Waterfront. The location is quite exclusive and by the water, not too far away from the conservatory domes. I quickly suggested to the parents that we will eat here after our visit to the Conservatory Flower Dome. It is not too faraway to walk which is handy for the mobility challenged mother, and we will not be shuttling from one place to another as well, which will save us time. Other than that, I am very curious to try this newly opened hawker place.

We ordered the local speciality—Satay barbecue of course with peanut sauce, some Roti flat bread which my mom really liked and a plate of Chicken Biryani Rice that came with a glass of hot milk tea.

We quite liked this simple dinner. The surroundings just made it classier I guess, haha. The barbecue was quite good, which can be comparable to the barbecue we have at home in Cebu (the best in the Philippines!), except that we don’t dip them in peanut sauce but in soy-vinegar-chili sauce. The roti and chicken biryani rice were also very nice. My mom has slowly opened up her palate to Indian cuisine. My dad on the other hand really liked the hot milk tea.

SisterJ and Myrhh were supposed to join us for dinner but they need to work longer since they will be taking a few days off for our extended island beach resort holiday in Bintan, Indonesia.

After our satay and biryani dinner, we walked leisurely back to the main building where we can queue for a taxi at the designated taxi stand, passing by the lighted supertrees and beautifully designed pathway pavilions. What a stunning sight and  a great way to close our hawker dinner. We were content and happy.

Oh, by the way, another thing I really like about Singapore—taxi stands are everywhere. You can also call a taxi service or just flag cabs on the street. They are not that expensive and they are very safe. Best way to get around Singapore without a car and if the metro is too far away.

Lastly, I would like to go back here at the Gardens by the Bay and dine at the Supertree =)
