Asparagus Season at the Grüner Markt – Grunmarkt – Green Market in Salzburg

From my Bavarian Hotel in Baierbrunn just outside Munich, I took the highway towards Salzburg but got off on the last exit of Germany before entering Austria. I didn’t want to pay the Austrian highway toll fee (vignette) so I am taking the national road to Salzburg city centre. When you know how to spend, you also know damn right when NOT to spend. The detour is only going to set me back under 10 minutes anyway.

I parked at the garage in Monschberg because my last activity for the day will be a Mozart concert dinner close by and I didn’t want to be walking far when it gets dark. These things I am always alert when travelling alone. Interestingly, the garage was inside the mountain, they actually tunnelled this mountain (Monschberg) which is quite impressive because it somehow gave inside the mountain a world of its own.

Grüner Markt, Salzburg

The first thing that greeted me when I got out of the parking garage was this market.

I just love farmer’s markets! It’s always been a staple activity for me to drop in a market everytime I visit a new country or city. So this came in as a lovely surprise, an incentive so to speak as I didn’t have to look anywhere further. Now this is a good start of my day in Salzburg =)

OPEN:  Mondays to Saturdays only but on Saturdays they finish early at around 5PM, or even earlier.
LOCATION:  Universitätsplatz (University Square) and its surrounding side streets. This is parallel to the famous main shopping street, Getreidegasse.

Salzburg city centre is compact so it will be impossible to miss this market.

There is another market across the bridge at Mirabell Square as well called Schrannenmarkt but it is only open during Thursdays.

Austria is big when it comes to dried meat. I remember years ago (circa 2006) during a skiing trip to the Austrian Alps in Zell am Ziller (Tirol) where I raided a delicatessen shop (claimed the Dutchman and his friends), haha. They were all entertained at my huge appetite for the dried stuff.

Spring is Asparagus Season in Europe

May is mainly white asparagus season in Central and Northern Europe so the market was filled with many asparagus vendors. Ever since, I have always preferred the green asparagus. I like them steamed and a bit crunchy, but recently I have become a white asparagus convert. White asparagus is very popular here in the Netherlands and I buy them when it’s in season.

I didn’t eat asparagus here in Salzburg but several weeks later in Helsinki, I had a delicious (white) asparagus meal for lunch. More on that soon.

Don’t you just find it cute when men are the ones doing market shopping?

If you are a foodie or a true blue market person, include this farmers market in your agenda when visiting Salzburg.

Drive to Salzburg, Austria

And here are some pictures I took during the early morning drive from Baierbrunn, Germany to Salzburg, Austria. The drive took me 1 hour and 45 minutes.

Not the best weather to look forward to but I will make the best of what is given to me in Salzburg =)
