Hawker Food at Sin Hoi Sai Eating House in Katong, Singapore: Sting Ray, Baby Kailan, Prawns in Salted Egg

I love the outdoor hawker food scene in Singapore. My sister lives in the East and Katong is the nearest area she can think of that has a lively hawker scene. My only request is that I want to eat fresh vegetables and seafood.

SisterJ and Myrhh are also going to introduce me to the grilled ‘Sting Ray’ dish. You know that flappy grey animal with a spiky nose? The first thing that came to my mind was the crocodile hunter celebrity in Australia. Who would have thought his life was on the hands of such animal? Nevertheless, I did not think of sting rays as a meal option, but they argued that the locals in Singapore love eating this. They themselves have been recent converts. Hmm, now I am intrigued.

When we arrived, the place was already full, but the trusty and speedy Chinese-Singaporean woman managing the tables quickly converted an eating space for us on the side street in just seconds. Voila! Hawker street food style. Welcome to Singapore =)

My parents are also arriving later in the evening, and my mom told us that we should go ahead and eat dinner as they are eating in the plane. Just before the food arrived, we got a call that they are already at the airport waiting for us. Ooops! Sorry mom and dad for letting you wait. We did not read the arrival times well. Luckily, the airport is quite near.

So we ordered ‘Baby Kailan in Garlic’ which is always a favourite of mine. I love my vegetables half cooked and crunchy. Then we also settled with some ‘Large Prawns cooked in Salted Egg’. This was surprisingly good, a bit sticky and crunchy. The ‘Grilled Sting Ray’ arrived and I found it to be quite juicy and chewy. I am not sure if this is going to be my favourite but it did taste good.

And oh, it is just so different eating white rice in Asia. There’s some, albeit simple, magic to it.

Sin Hoi Sai has reasonable prices but I read from local restaurant reviews online that they are on the expensive side of zi char type of restaurants (cook and fry) in the hawker food scene. Mainly because of the location I guess, and the popularity as well of the place. As you can see, there’s lots of locals and tourists flocking to this place! The eating house is open until 04:00 in the morning.

Nonetheless, my price point orientation is Euros (and Netherlands pricing standard), so everything is cheaper for me wherever I travel to in the world, although I tend to double check the prices when I find myself in the Nordics, the UK and Switzerland.

Moi and Myrhh. I am looking very tired here but trying to hold up to be in the Asian timezone.

SisterJ and moi.

As you can see, I managed to quickly put on my paparazzi hat, just in time before the food arrived!

Crunchy baby kailan in garlic sauce.

Truly Cebuano style, I prepared my fish sauce with chili. Love the smell of white rice.

Large prawns in salted egg.

This is the sting ray, which is grilled in a (banana?) leaf cover.
