Austerlitz (Utrecht, Netherlands): Late Autumn Walks in a Forest and Shifting Sands

Would you say autumn is your favourite season? If not, you’d change your mind after seeing this picture:

Dutchman and I have been quite lazy recently with regard to our forest walks and visitation. We have only been to the forest once this year so I guess it is time for another visit soon.

This particular walk though was in Austerlitz in Utrecht last year. The Utrecht Forest National Park (Nationaal Park Utrechtse Heuvelrug) is one of the biggest in the country. It is a conglomeration of forests stretching 50 kilometres in length with a total surface area of 230 kilometres. You can just imagine the hundreds of walking paths here.

We visited one of its sub-forests, as well a nature sand park that reminds me of a ghost town in Death Valley, California. It was the end of autumn but the colours were still gorgeous. So stunning that it makes me excited to welcome the autumn season.

Come along and walk with us =)

Beautiful colourful mushrooms.

Standing on top of a decapitated tree.

Autumn is my favourite season because it brings gorgeous colours.

And it is actually cool to walk on a bed of leaves.

This is the strangest mushroom I have ever seen. Black and it looks like a snail clinging (hanging as well) on to a tree trunk.

Then we stumbled upon a sand park…

This shifting sands park gave me that feeling of having just visited a ghost town. Like one of those ghosts towns in Death Valley California, USA. We were there 4 years ago.

Yup, more decapitated trees… just adding to the ghost town feel.

More mushrooms sprouting like a flower from a decapitated little tree.

It was getting dark so its time to leave and have tea at home.

Visit Period: November 2013
