Website: Museum of Broken Relationships
Upper Town of Zagreb, Croatia | Open until 21:00
Perhaps one of the most interesting museums I have visited so far. It displays objects that once held dear to one of the lovers in the broken relationship which alongside chronicles a short story, a caption, some an essay, a few talked about the highs and lows of the relationship and how it eventually ended.
We all have fallen in love and have mended a broken heart, don’t we? Falling in love and love in general is a beautiful thing. It makes us complete. It makes us happy. It’s like a drug. It leaves us breathless.
A Peek into My Broken Relationship Story
After reading the short story captions of the items displayed in the museum representing broken relationships, I can’t help but think of mine. My broken relationship before I met the Dutchman.
The break up with my Ex was some 15+ years ago, a year before I met the Dutchman. My Ex and I had a very fascinating not your run-of-the-mill type of relationship that our story could have been an interesting addition to this one-of-a-kind museum.
He was American, 6 years younger than me and he moved in with me in Manila. We were young, crazy, in love and stupid. To make the story short which actually has more juicy details to it but I am not ready to wash my dirty laundry in public, I kicked him out of my apartment at 04:00 (4AM) in the most dramatic scene ever which involved reinforcements from my corporate gay neighbour and his visiting boy toy friends.
My take away from this experience: I learned that I am a strong individual. I learned to use my head and make decisions with it instead of my heart and it is not easy to do this when you are in love. On top of it all, I learned to love myself. I was 28 then.
I do not think I have any item right now that remembers me of him so I might just pass up with donating my story.
Below are a few of the broken relationship items and stories in the museum that caught my curiosity.
The museum evoked memories of yesteryears which I shall personally say has only strongly validated my relationship today. I am sure everyone will have a different experience and feeling when visiting this museum. Do not worry, there is a cafe at the other wing of the museum aptly called the Brokenships Cafe, should you need to pull yourself together after the nostalgic – emotional visit.
