Old Quebec, Canada: Hot Chocolate (Choco Chaud), Place Royale and Fresque des Québécois

Choco chaud (hot chocolate) reminds me of the Alps and our wintersport holidays. Dutchman loves to drink this whilst I prefer gluhwein, although sometimes I do order this when I have the cravings.

My first day in Quebec was a bit of a cold day. It was dry but the skies were grey and the wind was blowing hard than normal. Because of this many of the outdoor terraces were empty. People preferred to sit inside.

Place Royale and the Notre-Dame-des-Victoires Church in the Lower Town of Old Quebec (beside Quartier Petit Champlain).

Now I really wanted to sit somewhere for a drink and I remember my niece AnK who told me about a nice cafe that I should not miss in Old Quebec, it is the La Maison Smith Cafe but unfortunately I didn’t have the address and I do not have internet on my phone. So whilst wandering around the narrow and pretty streets of Quartier Petit Champlain, I kept my eyes open for the cafe. Only when I walked further, and out of the quarter, I came upon a square called Place Royale, I realised that I have stumbled upon the cafe. Hallelujah!

As it was a cold and windy day no one was obviously sitting outside. I managed to grab a seat by the window after ordering a choco chaud with whipped cream on top (yup, I went all the way!) and one piece of pistachio macaron. I love the pistachio flavour on a macaron and ice cream. The nice view of Place Royale came as a bonus. I would have loved to sit outside on the terrace but not with this windy weather.

Just to give an idea where Place Royale is located. Here is a walk from the Frontenac Chateau to Place Royale. The quicker option is to take the furnicular down to Quarter Petit Champlain and then walk to Place Royale.

So this case comes highly recommended for a pit stop if you are in Old Quebec and exploring the Lower Town. Their hot chocolate is the most favourite drink on the menu list.

For some reason I wasn’t alble to visit the Notre-Dame-des-Victoires Church in the middle of Place Royale. I just simply forgot.

Trivia: Did you know that the square was previously called Place du Marche? Now you know! =)

Hot chocolate drink + whipped cream + a piece of pistachio macaron. Just 1 macaron because I do not have a sweet tooth.

View from where I am sitting.

It is self-service here.

This is the 4,665-square-foot trompe-l’oeil mural depicting Québec’s 400 years history. Located very near to Place Royale at the corner of Rue Notre-Dame and Côte de la Montagne. The name of the mural painting is ‘The Fresque des Québécois’.

The crossing on Rue St-Paul. This is by the way a fountain.
