Singapore: Sri Vadapathira Kaliamman Temple and Serangoon Road

Back in November I met up with family in Singapore for our annual reunion.

On our second day in town, I was craving for ‘roti prata’ while my mom can’t wait to shop. I suggested that we pay Little India a visit. My parents have been in Singapore many times but they haven’t been to Little India and they have not tasted roti prata as well. Then SisterJ mentioned that there is a big department store there called Mustapha. The store isn’t sassy but its massive. It is where the locals really shop.

Hmm why not? Little India here we come =)

Because we couldn’t find a cab, we took the bus and I am quite glad we did because we had to get off somewhere and walk to Little India’s main road – Seranggoon Road.

We were in Singapore just a week after Deepavali (or Diwali, the ‘festival of lights’) so the streets were still festively decorated. What a beautiful sight. Just too bad that we came late and have not therefore witnessed the event.

This was the same story with our Bangkok trip as well. We left on the day of the Loi Krathong festival. Well, it can only be bad timing or bad planning. I’d say bad timing because we all do not have the luxury of time. My mom was very strict about the date that she needs to be back home and I don’t have much flexibility either.

Here at Serangoon Road you can find the Sri Vadapathira Kaliamman Temple. We managed to visit the temple quickly, just my mom and I because the rest of the clan were too lazy to remove their shoes. Or shall I say it didn’t really interest them much. My mom was curious just like me, however the difference between us two is that, for her having seen 1 temple is enough, whereas for me, it is just the beginning, or shall I say, a teaser.

On Serangoon Road you can also see a number of preserved traditional shophouses.

Colourful shophouses on Serangoon Road. I was here in Little India together with the Dutchman 9 years ago.
