Modena easily became my favourite city for this short spring Italian holiday, and I will tell about why as I blog along…
In Modena I parked the car at the Novi Park (address to put in the GPS: Viale Achille Fontanelli), the best place to park in my opinion as the underground parking is just a stone’s throw away from the centre.
The first thing I bumped into in Modena is the little square called Piazza della Pomposa. Leading to this square is a small alley dressed in bright orange, pink, yellow and tangerine hues. I sensed a bustling of activities ahead and indeed a small Saturday farmer’s market on the piazza greeted me. I love markets and this was a nice surprise. I didn’t however bought anything but managed to browse the stalls a bit.
On the square is a church called Chiesa di Santa Maria della Pomposa. I peeked inside to check it out. Italy is one of the best countries in the world for church and art sightseeing.
The Romans have built civilisation partly by exploiting the rise of Christianity. As a means to reach their goals and spread their empire, which was their demise as well, helaas. But we all can enjoy the fruit of those glorious ages through the art that has been left in history. I have to ponder — Aren’t we glad we do not live in those dark, confusing and violent days?
What I am trying to say is that you do not really have to go to a museum to appreciate art and history in Italy. Just visit the churches, small and big alike and be prepared to be amazed and entertained. The best thing? Most of the churches are free and do not offer any entrance fees. You can donate though if you want to.
In fact in this Emilia-Romagna trip, I have visited one of the most striking churches I have ever been to. In Parma, but that deserves another post.
