Panoramic Views of Helsinki from Ateljee Bar at Torni

When travelling to a new place, do you search for gorgeous panoramic views? Well I do and I get really serious with this task by employing google ahead of time. In Helsinki, I found a bar in the middle of the city on top of a building with fantastic views.

I blogged about my first impression of Helsinki here: My Analogy of Helsinki and the Senate Square and this is basically the summary:

“ Now Helsinki in my opinion is not the sexy lady that will give you the jaw-dropping just landed ‘OMG-am-I-really-here?’ kind of travel goosebumps. She doesn’t have the sinful, playful yet mysterious edge of Amsterdam, the royalty and metropolitan power of London, the rich squalid annals of history and the mind-blowing orgasm of an open-air museum that is Rome, and the elegance, flair and romance of Paris. She somehow reminds me a little bit of Oslo. She is what I call a — decent, prim and proper lady worth checking out =) â€

That said, I did not really had very high expectations about Helsinki. Expectations anyway tend to ruin our travel experiences so I think we need to be careful with setting the bar too high. The best attitude to take when travelling is an open mind and willingness to experince something new.

Ateljee Bar and Helsinki City Views
Website: Ateljee Bar at Sokos Hotel Torni

Without further ado, here is Helsinki from the top of the the Ateljee Bar at Sokos Hotel Torni, also known as the Torni Tower. I very much recommend a visit here over a cup of coffee. You’ll want to see the city from a different view I am sure and this is one of the best located viewing point in the  city centre.

The bar however definitely needs some upgrade. It is not very posh but the views are worth it. There is something about seeing the place you are visiting from up above. It gives some perspective.

Upon alighting the lift this winding staircase greeted me which will bring me to Ateljee Bar.

During the ride to the top, a group of Swede students joined me in the lift. They were in a very chatty mood and one of the guys smiled at me so I smiled back. He said, ‘We are from Sweden. Where are you from?’

‘Well, it depends on what do you want to know? Is it where I now live? Or where I was born?’

I did not expect you can meet people and have conversations on a quick lift ride.

The indoor bar area.

Outdoor terraces are located on both wings. This is the smaller wing.

You can see the Helsinki Cathedral (St.  Nicholas Church) on the Senate Square in the distance.

This is the bigger outdoor terrace wing. The Finns always serve their coffee with a chocolate candy.

This is the Old Helsinki Church which became too small for the growing Finnish population in the city, so they built the magnificent Helsinki Cathedral on top of the Senate Square to accommodate every worshipper.

You can see the Uspenski Cathedral on the left and the Kauppatori Market Square covered with colourful parasols on the right on the harbour.

The Torni Tower (or Sokos Hotel Torni).
