Last spring during the extended 4-day religious holiday at the end of May, I went to Debrecen, a city in the eastern part of Hungary. Here I did side trips to Eger, Lillafured, Miskolc, as well to Oradea in Romania and Kosice in Slovakia. It may seem a lot but they are all near to each other and very much doable when you have a rental car. Debrecen is located near the border to Romania and Slovakia.
In Debrecen I stayed at this really cool and new hotel, the Malom Hotel. It used to be a windmill barn which has been renovated into a hotel recently. The windmill part is utilised as the reception with the glass lift built in the middle and the stairs circling around it. It is beautifully thought of in terms of both aesthetic and functional design, and is also executed very well. I really loved it and I could not stop admiring when I first saw the very lofty reception roof!
Although the furnishings were not that of the expensive kind, the rooms were quite elegant. I loved the most the grey carpet. It is just so chic. There is however no mini bar inside the room but you can buy drinks at the reception or just go to the restaurant below.
I have wanted to try dinner at the restaurant but somehow never made it because I was busy travelling somewhere. I did however have all my breakfasts here. They were simple and fine for me, although not a very healthy option with all the bacon, sausages, eggs and croissants.
In addition, the hotel provides free WIFI and parking. It’s also not very far from the centre, just about a 10-minute walk on the main road. The staff speak good English and were all friendly, always ready to strike up a conversation with you.
This is definitely one of the interesting concept hotels I have stayed at.
