Zwolle on a Saturday in January

Bru and I met up last January in Zwolle, a medieval once-fortified city in the eastern part of the Netherlands.

The Sassenpoort is a gatehouse in the city walls of Zwolle.

In Zwolle we visited a bookstore in a church, checked out the Saturday farmer’s market and we had an eat-all-you-can late lunch at a Japanese restaurant also in a church. There seems to be a church trend happening in this city, huh..

We walked around as well and enjoyed the local sights. The most popular piece of architecture in Zwolle is I think the beautiful Sassenpoort (see picture above) circa 1409. We also  did some window shopping and I managed to buy a nice big scarf. I wanted to go to Librije’s gastronomic shop but we were running late so we did not make it.

This is where Zwolle is on the map of the Netherlands:

Zwolle is about an hour and a half from Amsterdam with the car and about 1 hour and 10 minutes with the train (with a transfer I reckon). Take your pick.

Busy Saturday shopping scene in the centrum.

Real lampshades without the stand.

Dutch-style architecture.

Kwast drank: A warm non-alcoholic Citroen drink, which is used as a home medicine for colds.

Shops in the centrum.

The Grote Kerk (or the Big Church) in the centrum of Zwolle.

Under the Sassenpoort at night.
