Foodie Paradise in Rotterdam: ‘De Markthal’

There’s a new food mecca in town! It’s the ‘Markthal’ in Rotterdam.

100 stands, 15 food shops, 8 restaurants, 1200 parking spaces and 228 apartments under the same bow building.

The market hall opened last year 2014 on the 1st of October. Three weeks after its opening, Dutchman and I paid Rotterdam a visit, with the Markthal stopover as the highlight of the day.

The concept of the Markthal is an all-in-one modern theory of shopping, eating, parking, working and living carried out under the same roof of the spectacular bow structure embroidered with larger-than-life happy paintings of flora and fauna, as well as fresh produce on its ceiling. It’s art and architecture meets food to visitors. But local residents live in the same building as well which makes it more fascinating I guess.

While there I wanted to have some wine and tapas at a Spanish tapas bar but the place was so full I could not get a little chat with the wait staff. So I settled instead for some to-go churros and ate it together with the Dutchman. The pastry was too sweet for us, we couldn’t even finish the one serving.

The Markthal is a must visit when you find yourself in Rotterdam, Netherlands, especially if you are a foodie. Join me below in my pictures tour as I walked around the market hall floor.
