OK, back to some touristy stuff in Copenhagen for a bit. I still have a lot to blog about my trip to Copenhagen last April and one of these is the ‘Amalienborg Palaces’. It’s just one of those places that you have to see when it’s your first time in the city.
Amalienborg Palace
The Amalienborg Palaces is the winter residence of the Danish Royal Family and it is completed in 1760. The palaces are guarded by the Royal Life Guards, day and night.
The 4 palaces are:
- Christian VII’s Palace (Moltke’s Palace) – open to the public
- Christian VIII’s Palace (Levetzau’s Palace) – open to the public
- Frederick VIII’s Palace (Brockdorff’s Palace)
- Christian IX’s Palace (Schack’s Palace)
Because I have the cOPENhagen card I felt the pressure to use most of the paid attractions in it so I checked out the ‘Museum Amalienborg Palace’. On the ground floor of the mansion, a number of apartments with original furniture relates the history of the Glucksburg dynasty. All the interiors were moved from other royal mansions to the museum. Every single item in the museum stands exactly where the king and queen originally placed them, making the visit a walk through the royal family’s private apartments over 150 years.
So, is it worth it to visit the museum? Yes if you are enamoured with royalty, and if you have the cOPENhagen card and happen to be in the area. No if you are not both. If I didn’t have the cOPENhagen card I would have only checked out the palaces from the outside and not the museum.
Frederick’s Church
Parallel north to the Amalienborg Palaces is ‘Frederick’s Church’ which I believe is part of the whole palace complex. The marble church and its dome strikingly resembles the St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.
I spent some time inside the church resting and admiring the interior.
I’m not sure if I mentioned in this blog that I am a free thinker. However, culture, history, tradition as well as religion fascinates me but I do not base my beliefs and reason for living on this. It’s just that, like travelling and photography, they are subjects I am very fond of.
