Autumn Forest Walks in Landgoed Heidestein-Bornia and sighting some Moorland Sheep

Dutchman and I love walking in the forest, especially in the autumn months, and winter as well. We like doing this because it gives us a fresh mind and soul. We both work fulltime during the week and a lot of work-related stress tend to add up at the end of the week. What better way to lose this by walking in the forest with mother nature cradling us. It makes us relaxed, and helps clear up our minds as well. I also love the smell of the earth, the trees and the leaves. It is like medicine to our soul.

Most people that we see walking in the forest are couples in their late 30’s to 60’s. We seldom see young people, mainly because young people are still active and have yet to develop their zen abilities.

For the last day of October Dutchman and I visited Landgoed Heidestein-Bornia. Dutchman found this app site where you can download walking maps with GPS into your phone.

We started on the wrong foot by following the mountain bike path. We were not looking clearly on the route, so we had to make a detour and walked beside the railway. Then we reached a farm with horses and crossed over a piece of estate where Drenthe moorland sheep were nibbling grass on the meadow. The whole area is fenced and no dogs, horses and bikers were allowed so that the sheep will obviously not run amok. We did not expect to be sighting the herd of moorland sheep. They were somewhat wild and were grazing from one location to another. We encountered them twice and the second time was a a very near chance meeting. One of the sheep stared at us for a long time until we were out of sight.

This was a rather short hiking route, we walked only for around 7 kilometres in total. Dutchman and I would love to come back here again and take the longer route.

Landgoed Heidestein-Bornia is located in the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, one of the large forest parks in the Netherlands.

The colours of fall in the Netherlands.

Love the leaves glistening against the sun. It was a lovely weather Saturday.

The mountain bike path. In the forest there are many walking paths, as well as mountain bike and horseback riding paths.

This places looks like a scene in a ghost town Hollywood flick.

Sand dunes and mounds everywhere…

Your forest bed of leaves is waiting for you =)

This is the gate and fence. Dogs and bikers are not allowed inside.

Moorland sheep (heideschapen) grazing.

These flowery shrubbery were quite cool. They were pink lavender in colour and we followed a small path in the middle that lets us cross the meadow easily.

We met the sheep again and the most right was staring at us without blinking and moving his neck until we were out of sight.
