This is one of the nice places to hang out in Istanbul, and it doesn’t matter if it is during the day or at night. It gets busier and livelier here though during the evenings especially on the weekends.
Many locals come here to just sit on square, on the steps or on the floor, bringing their own Turkish Kebabs or Lamahcuns (Turkish Pizza) and drinks, enjoying the nice surroundings, the camaraderie and the lighted Galata Tower.
The atmosphere here is hip, cool, trendy and young. But the oldies are welcome of course as well. There is a restaurant across on the square for those who fancy a much better ambiance and where one can eat properly. I ate here with a New Zealand couple I met on my first day in town which would be a story for another post.
I didn’t go up the tower though. I walked close to 60 kilometres in this trip and didn’t envision myself climbing a long flight of stairs. I however went to a chic bar where I had a stunning view of Istanbul and the boutique hotel where I stayed also had a lovely rooftop terrace where I took my Turkish breakfasts, so going up the tower doesn’t really offer me any value anymore.
This is however a nice place to chill out with a drink in the late afternoon and in the evening.
