In July this year Dutchman and I did a hike in Austerlitz, located in Zeist but the pyramid area is officially part of Woudenberg. We always come to this area to unwind and this time we chose the Marmontberg trail passing through the Monument of Marmontberg, the Pyramide of Austerlitz.
It’s a 7-kilometre hike and good for 1 hour and a half including a stop. Not bad. We passed by a mini fun fair for children as well where we stopped.
It was my first time to visit the Pyramid of Austerlitz, a monument commissioned by General Auguste Marmont in 1804 in remembrance to the 18,000 French soldiers that camped in the area during the time of Napoleon. The pyramid is carved from earth and covered in grass with a wooden obelisk at the top.
When the pyramid fell into neglect, the Beaufort family who bought the surroundings restored it. It’s a historical attraction and you have to pay in order to get in and go up the mount. We didn’t go up but it must be nice to see the views of the surroundings from up there.
After the hike, we treated ourselves to some hearty pancakes at Pannenkoekenhuis Bergzicht.

The children’s fun fair in Austerlitz.

It looks like the forest is partly a shooting terrain? Hmm…

I like eating at pancake restaurants (or anywhere else) after the hike so I do not have to cook dinner anymore =)
P.S. Gross, I look old in these fotos.
