Utrecht, Netherlands: Lighting a Candle and a Surprise Seafood Antipasti Lunch

Last April Bru visited me in Utrecht. It was great timing because although the day was not that warm, it was dry and the sun shone from time to time, which is quite a novelty in always damp and humid Netherlands.

Umm, lekker =)

Bru and I first went to the Dom Church to light a candle for Blondine. I missed her so bad. She left last April and I was still coming to terms of her leaving me and leaving all of us. She never wanted to leave in the first place. She wasn’t ready… no one is really.

Life is unfair. It is never fair. You always have to fight for your own life and for fairness as well. That is the raw reality of life.

After visiting the Dom Church, Bru and I did a little bit of window shopping, which really was just plainly looking at the window displays and shelves sans the actual shopping activity. Then we proceeded for lunch. I didn’t have a venue in mind, but because it is lovely weather I want Bru to taste the real Utrecht ambiance. The Oudegracht, the old canal flowing through the city centre, is the best place to experience this.

It was a very busy Saturday in the center and the cafe terraces on the canals were quite full, so beggars can’t be choosers. But I was able to quickly spot an empty table right on the canal at the Italian place, so I right away signaled Bru to follow me. We have just snagged a great spot to enjoy our lunch =)

I swear, I must have eaten here at Restaurant Il Pozzo pre-blogging and pre-digital days with the Dutchman. I am getting the dejavu’s.

Bru and I ordered drinks—a prosecco for me because it is nice spring weather. I also want to give a toast to Blondine who always love some bubbles for lunch. Bru settled for a glass of warm tea.

As we were perusing the menu for our lunch choice, my eye caught the antipasti section – Antipasti il Pozzo “Superiore†con Pesce. Antipasti is starters in Italian and this particular antipasti is a spread of different sorts of Mediterranean seafood fares, grilled vegetables and green salad. Bru and I both adore salads, vegies and fish, so we were quite unanimous in choosing this.

And we were glad we did! Our antipasti order was the talk of the lunch hour around us on the terrace. Our direct neighbours cannot stop ogling at the platter, haha. The big question: Did it taste good as it looks? Well, I can definitely confirm that the antipasti tasted as good as it looks. All the ingredients in it, the fish, greens and the vegies were juicy and fresh.

The ambiance of the Oudegracht was gorgeous as well. We delighted ourselves on all the passing boats, canoes, paddle boats and even ducks =)

After lunch we stopped by at the cosy Drieharingstraat to have coffee and share a tiramisu dessert at De Markt. The tiramisu was really nice and we also loved the outdoor terrace atmosphere of this busy and charming street.

To sum it all up, we really enjoyed the afternoon, in particular the lunch surprise and our nice location on the Oudegracht canal. The seafood antipasti platter was exactly what I envisioned it to be like, and the tiramisu was just the perfect dessert to close the lunch as well.

If you are visiting Utrecht, I highly recommend the antipasti at Il Pozzo and the tiramisu at De Markt.

Lighting a candle for our dear Blondine. I miss her.

The gothic Cathedral of Utrecht or the Dom Church.

The cafe of the Dom Church with the view to the Church gardens (entrance to the cafe is beside the souvenir shop inside the church).

Finally here at Restautant Il Pozzo on the Oudegracht canal. We found a great spot =)

Bru is quite happy with the antipasti spread for lunch! She cannot wait to dig her fork in!

I actually prefer prosecco over champagne.

This is Utrecht’s Oudegracht and the view from our table.

My ideal lunch.

The seafood antipasti platter is good for 2 persons to order.

After lunch we had a shared tiramisu dessert and coffee at De Markt on Drieharingstraat.
