The Sibelius Monument in Sibelius Park, Helsinki

The Sibelius Monument and Park is dedicated to Finnish composer, Jean Sibelius. His music, especially with the composition of Finlandia, played a very important role in the formation of Finnish national identity leading towards the country’s independence from Russia.

Sibelius Monument

The monument was designed by Elia Hiltunen and this is her interpretation of Sibelius’ music. Cut steel pipes welded together with traces of intricate lace-like embossed designs. It looks like an organ pipe to me, gone wild. It is a genius work of art.

For a sample of his music, check out one of his masterpieces at Youtube: Finlandia by Sibelius and see as well some amazing and rugged scenery of the beauty that is Finland. The intro of this symphonic orchestra piece has an ominous impression which reminds me of a scary movie during my childhood days, Jaws, haha.

Many tour buses in Helsinki come here at Sibelius Park to visit the Sibelius Monument, however, if you do come on your own, I suggest you stay a bit longer in the park, enjoy the flowers and greenery, have a little walk along the seaside yacht marina located beside the park and then perhaps indulge in a cuppa at Café Regatta. I am sure you will love it.

A different angle of viewing the sculpture.

Some of the tubes were cut in rugged finnish.

Very interesting lace-like embossed design on the tubes, which somewhow reflects the feminine side of the artist, but it can also be interpreted as Sibelius’ music flowing through the pipes =)

Jean Sibelius.
