Village Igloos in Valloire, French Alps: Les Grottes de Neige

In my previous blog post about Valloire alpine village, I mentioned that the ski resort is ideal for families with children. There are many activities in the mountain village catering to families and non-skiers. One of these are the Village Igloos or Snow Caves which are locally called ‘Les Grottes de Neige’.

At the top of the Cret de la Brive, you follow the sign of the Village igloos, which is just a few metres away really.

Access to the village igloos / snow caves is via the Cret de la Brive gondola station in the centre of Valloire. Upon reaching the top, the igloo entrance is just a few metres away. If you do not have a ski pass, you would need to pay for the one-time retour gondola ride + entrance to the igloo. I think the tourism office of Valloire has a package rate or discount for day trippers. I believe you can also inquire at the cashier at the Cret de la Brive gondola kiosk.

Dutchman was not in the mood to see this. He thinks it’s boring. Well, well, why am I not surprised? lol

So I went alone while he waited for me at the café restaurant across. I am always curious and anything that is new and different in the place I am visiting, I am always willing to check it out.

The theme for this year’s winter igloo is Snow Circus which is not complete without the elephant, and in fact it is one of the first sculptures I saw upon entering the snow cave.

A circus caravan, a performing elephant and swinging gymnasts.

Climbing bears and of course a circus is not a circus without it’s resident clown. I like the idea of the coloured lighting and reflections.

The call of the wild: Lions and Leopards.

Face sculptures, very nice.

Come inside the caravan for a picture!

It is actually very bright and very white inside the snow caves, but for the purpose of depth and making the sculptures stand out in the picture, I have darkened and warmed up the pictures with the use of Picasa colour enhancements.

My verdict: It is nothing extraordinary but it’s a nice project and initiative especially for the children in Valloire-Galibier ski resort. If you have little children this is a nice thing to do after the ski lessons.

For adults, it’s all up to you if this falls along your alley. If you are a curious kid at heart just like me, then by all means have a look see. If not, keep digging the slopes with your skis or snowboard.
