This very French European quarter is located in the Lower Town of Old Quebec, just below the iconic Frontenac Chateau. One can walk down with the stairs or take the funicular for a fee.
Walking down to the Lower Town is much better because there are many sights to experience along the way. Moreover, there is the Breakneck Staircase that first-time visitors must experience. The stairs go down to the Petit Champlain Quarter and has a lovely view to the pretty streets from the top . These stairs were initially built in 1635 as wooden stairs, after which they were later turned to steel and then to what they are now today.
I like the Quarter Petit Champlain a lot. It’s very charming, pretty, colourful and lively. The downside is, it is super touristy, especially Rue Petit Champlain.
One thing I however noticed about the buildings in Old Quebec especially in this quarter is that they are way too clinical and overdone. Too much painting and making sure all the edges are polished and the surface washed, makes them look reproduced and not authentic anymore, which technically speaking are genuine old historical buildings.
My niece, AnK said it reminds her a bit of Disneyland, which is exactly what I also thought. The rustic and natural feel of the architecture & design of the buildings that I believe should reflect back to time and history, are unfortunately missing.
I personally think that the city can make use of its French connection and hire conservation consultants from France for advice. But then again, maybe this style is the French Canadian way of showing and doing things? Now, that’s also fine. Each city has its own trademark, right?
