I did not have much luck with markets in this south of Spain holiday because Torremolinos where we were staying did not have a public market. To make sure of this, I asked the hotel reception and they confirmed that indeed there is no public market. Malaga would be the nearest. There is however a mercadillo, a dry goods open-air market every Thursday in the town proper behind the city hall so I opted to go there instead.
Mercadillo de Torremolinos was a bit disappointing but since this is what they have so far I have to make the most of it. It’s better than nothing alright but my interest is in food and gourmet markets. Perhaps for others who like shopping and bazaars, the Torremolinos market might just be good enough.
The open air market is open in the morning until 14:00 and is located behind the city hall, across the highway, by the Auditorium Municipal and Palacio San Miguel. To get there take a cab (they ask between €6-8) or walk like I did.

On the other hand, I read about the Fuengirola market down south that is held every Tuesday. It is said to be the biggest and the most impressive market in Costa del Sol and Malaga province but helaas I never made it there.
