Almost 5 years ago, Dutchman and I holidayed in Kos, Greece and we took day trips to the other islands that belonged to the Dodecanese chain. We sailed to Kalymnos, Pserimos and Plati, and even as far as Bodrum in Turkey. I have not really blogged about these side trips before as back then the focus was my expatriation (expatriotism), i.e., building a new life in the Netherlands, adjusting, learning the language, etcetera, but I’ve since settled in and moved on with life. Now, I am a travel addict and I am going back through old fotos and trying to relive previous travel experiences through this blog.
And because it’s been that long, I can’t really remember in which order we did the islands tour so I am going to randomly choose an island. Kalymnos will be first.
I remember Kalymnos as the biggest island of the 3 that we sailed to. We docked on the island’s cove harbour called Pothia. As soon as we alighted from the boat and weaved our way into the little town center, Dutchman and I broke off from the group we sailed with and surveyed the environs on our own. Kalymnos is quite a mountainous piece of landmass; rocky, earthy and a bit barren except for the built-up area surrounding the waterfront. Feeling slightly adventurous, we further climbed up to the residential part where the houses are seated on the mountain cliffs. Up there we were able to enjoy the beautiful views down to the harbour .
In the town center, there were a lot of souvenir shops selling sponges from different varieties and sizes. Sponge is the main product of Kalymnos and sponge diving is the most common occupation in the island, in addition to fishing of course, and umm {clears throat}, patrolling the sea borders from Turkey, which, fast forward 2010-2011 is a big pressing EU immigration subject matter.
Hope you enjoy the fotos below.
