I woke up rather early today, 05:30 to be exact and ended up surfing the web when I read about the earthquake and tsunami devastation in Japan. Horrifying! Moreover, the tsunami is expected to reverberate across the Pacific ocean and will most likely hit California coast before 08:00. A quick look at the clock 06:20 and the Dutchman beside me is still sleeping soundly. My initial reaction was—Are we on higher ground? Oh no, we are not! We only have an hour or so, I need to wake the Dutchman up!

Tsunami Worries
Anyway, Dutchman thought I was over-reacting. He said not to worry as he is sure there will be no tsunami waves, and if there is, it would only be 1 to 3 feet. The hotel manager however had something else in mind, he told us he is going home before the waves hit the coast at 08:00, umm alright, that is not helpful at all. So Dutchman and I argued about the +- possibilities and because I am the woman, I won =). If the waves hit we have to be on higher ground and we have to see it approaching as well. Oh dear, will this be a historical event?
So before 08:00 we are on the highest hill of San Francisco overlooking the bay to Alcatraz. At the strike of 08:00 there were no waves in sight. We did see patrol police on boats and a helicopter. We waited for another half an hour… but helaas there was nothing, there were no waves.
Now very impatient, we drove down to the beach front and saw a news crew also waiting for some tsunami action.

Instead, this is what we saw on San Francisco, California coast…

Thus, it was false alarm indeed. Tsunami warnings along California coast has been downgraded to tsunami advisory. Big SIGH of relief!
Dutchman on the other hand, ‘I told you so…!’
