York Railway Station: A monument to extravagance

I really like the York Train Station, it reminds me of Amsterdam Centraal Station.

The York Railway Station opened in 1839 and is one of the important railway junctions and pretty as well in the United Kingdom. Designed by Thomas Prosser, it was called ‘a monument to extravagance’ (when it re-opened after renovation in 1877) during its heydays.

York Railway Station. 2nd foto from wikipedia because I forgot to take a snapshot of the station’s facade.

The iron pillar columns on the platforms are in Corinthian orders with a touch of Victorian detail in design…. and Yorkshire crisps (yum!) and macarons from Bettys as presents for the BFF.

In these 2 fotos above, the curve structure of the train station not only reminds me of Amsterdam Centraal Station but also of Koln Hauptbahnhof (Cologne Central Station) in Germany.

So now my short York trip is over, I am now ready for some BFF get together with Queen Victoria who lives in Sheffield with her hubby and 2 sweet boys. The train connection is really superb; the non-stop ride only takes 46 minutes.

Time to board my train. See you later in Sheffield!
