The country is so lagged behind and time warped. There are barely cars driving on the rundown highways, instead, we have this kind of vehicular traffic joining us on the road…
Well now, welcome to the real Cuba! Charming huh?
Cuban highways are called, ‘Autopista’ and ‘Carreta Central’. Speed limits are 80 KPH and 100 KPH but we drove between 120 KPH and 140 KPH, even with the bad condition of the highways. We just slowed down as we passed by crossings and police outposts =)
Regarding the road conditions in Cuba, it really is not THAT bad. It is bad but doable. Just focus on the road and watch out for the potholes while driving =)
Moreover, watch out for the animals that tend to go astray on the highways, and the locals who think it is an extension to their living rooms. We even saw someone napping on the highway, on the right lane! Not joking. We freaked out a bit of course, haha! Good thing I was driving on the middle lane though.
As for the police. They never really bothered us except for an incident in Trinidad which I will post separately. It was my fault haha. Anyway, the police in Cuba don’t really check the foreigners, they control-check the locals instead. Must be the Marxist thing.
Anyway, this post shows the transition from urban Cuba to rural Cuba. Ah, I have more stories about the Cuban highways. Some of them were unbelievable.
More next! Besos!
