Traditional Danish lunch experience: Smorrebrod at Aamanns

When a restaurant has been awarded with ‘Lunch restaurant of the year’ and ‘Best open sandwiches’ in Denmark, one thing I know for sure—I have to get myself there!

I’m more a lunch person than a dinner one so the desire to come here is compelling. So while in Copenhagen last April, I made sure to pay a visit at Aamanns for lunch and try their famous open sandwiches—the smorrebrod.

I think this is haddock with dill, salmon roe, shallots and onions and crunchy tiny potato chips on Danish rye bread.

However, I arrived late at Aamans Establissement/Restaurant and didn’t realise that their last order for lunch is only up to 14:30. It is quite puzzling actually. For a very popular lunch restaurant… er, why are they closing this early? Oh well, your guess is as good as mine.

‘You are late, we are already closed.’ Said the waiter. ‘But you can go to Aamanns Takeaway next door, it is open.’

The Aamanns restaurant is chicer of course and I would have preferred to eat here but there’s nothing much I can do when they are not serving lunch anymore. So I went to the annexed takeaway café next door. Here you can order your smorrebrods ‘to go’ or ‘dine in’. The café is light and airy, and very friendly which was quite nice and welcoming.

So here is the judgment… Aamanns comes high in my book! It’s traditionally Danish and the food is great going at 4.5 stars out of 5 for me. Definitely worth it.

Aamanns Restaurant and Aamanns Takeaway (cafe) are located side by side on Øster Farimagsgade 10, Copenhagen.

Lovely spring blooms. Sadly I do not know the name of this flower.
