There is no doubt that ‘Nyhavn’ or New Haven, the 17th century waterfront of Copenhagen is the most touristy place in the city, or probably the whole country, but it is also one of the most gorgeous and dynamic entertaining places. It is probably the best place to anchor yourself to a delightful café and people watch.
You cannot go wrong at Nyhavn
Even the locals, they come here every now and then to enjoy what it has to offer—mostly the inviting bars, café terraces and restaurants, while eager tourists wait for the hourly canal rides around the corner.
So without having to explain further, I made sure I squeezed a date with Nyhavn into my schedule. I first surveyed the harbour strip walking past the terraces and checking out where the best seats are, but it looks like most of the café terraces were overflowing with the masses. It was almost impossible to find a free table.
I lingered around a bit nearby the café terrace I was eyeing at, waiting for a free table to come free, and my patience surely paid. Hallelujahs in order!
People watching and some whisky love (Irish coffee)
Some whiskey love. My hot Irish Coffee helped warm me up a bit =)
Even though the skies were blue with a few scattered clouds here and there, spring (April) in Copenhagen was nowhere near what real spring weather is all about so I decided to go for a hot ‘Irish Coffee’ with this special date with Nyhavn. I need some whiskey to warm me up a bit =)
What I really did here in the harbour was people watching, a much-loved pastime by many Europeans. The laid back café terraces are a major social culture in Europe, which is also the reason why I simply love travelling around this multilingual, multicultural and multifaceted continent. People love to gather outside and be seen. I just love the social atmosphere, it is very contagious.
A quick trip to the city centre in Utrecht or Amsterdam, a weekend in Madrid or an afternoon in Nyhavn, Copenhagen will surely guarantee a chill out stint of sitting outside on a café terrace sipping coffee, beer or wine while people watching.
