Cuban Creole Lunch at Casa del Campesino in Las Terazzas, Cuba

After our stay in Vinales, Pinar del Rio where we spent the last day horse-back riding in the Vinales Valley, Blondine and I are again back on the road, to the direction of Havana. Our flight back to the Netherlands is later in the evening.

We will be passing by UNESCO world heritage site, ‘Las Terazzas’, a biosphere nature reserve rich in flora and fauna located in Sierra del Rosario, Artemisa province (previously Habana province). We will be having our late lunch here.

Las Terazzas is about 45 minutes from Havana. To have an idea of our road trip, please check this blog entry and map: Cuban Road Trip. This blog post is therefore already at the tail end of our journey (*sob*).

When we arrived in Las Terazzas, the guard at the entrance of the nature reserve told us that if we want Cuba ‘Criolla’ cuisine then we have to go to ‘Casa del Campesino’, a creole farmhouse restaurant set in the middle of the wildlife oasis. It’s our last day in Cuba and it’s our last chance to enjoy all the local Cuban stuff so Blondine and I agreed to go here.

The restaurant indeed is in an open-air nature setting. We quickly ordered some mojitos, which are a staple drink in Cuba. The 2 tables beside us were occupied by Dutch tourists on a group tour. We noticed that Dutch people (tourists and those living there for whatever reasons) were everywhere in Cuba. Very interesting.

Blondine ordered her favourite Cuban dish, Ropa Vieja (shredded beef) while I settled for the Creole grilled chicken. In addition to this, we were served with white rice, black beans and yuca (cassava) chips as side dishes. This was a lunch feast fit for a king!

We first discovered Ropa Vieja in Old Havana on our first night in the city. Blondine also had the same dish for dinner in Camaguey. We also had this for lunch in Bayamo as well. As you can see the trend, this is surely a favourite on our list!

We highly recommend Casa del Campesino in Las Terazzas.

Our royal lunch spread. Too much food, haha!

Turtles and the resident peacock and peahen flirting with each other served as unexpected entertainment.

Rich in flora. Blondine and I loved the nature feel of the restaurant.

Toilet Casa del Campesino

Even when you go visit the toilet, you cannot escape nature =). Glad they had the lower part of the window glass covered!

More of Las Terazzas next.
