Staying at an English Cottage in the Cameron Highlands: The Smokehouse Hotel

For our stay in the Cameron Highlands, we chose the English Tudor cottage hotel ‘The Smokehouse Hotel’ which has a conservatory that served tea and scones. It also has a traditional English restaurant, a little pub and a lovely quaint garden with beautiful flowers.

Now the review… I chose this hotel because it really looks very pretty from the pictures. I like that it is an English cottage house which reflects the British occupation history of the region and especially in the Cameron Highlands. My mom also loves flowers and I am sure she will enjoy the lush and colourful garden. Not many hotels in Cameron have a garden like this.

LOCATION: On the southern part of the Cameron Highlands Golfcourse, halfway between Tanah Rata and Brinchang.

HIGHS: English Tudor style hotel although you can see that it has seen better days but very comfortable beds, big spacious room (we booked the family suite), beautiful garden with many flowers, very good English breakfast package, free parking, location is lovely, free wifi, coffee & tea facilities in the room, welcome fruit basket in the room, has a traditional English restaurant, has a conservatory that serves tea-scones-jams-clotted cream all day and has a small English pub with an open fire.

LOWS: No hot water! Old-fashioned hotel, a bit on the shabby and mouldy side, definitely needs uplift, like now. Early check-out at 11am (looks like they have since changed this).

The English Tudor inspired lobby and living room of the hotel.

The traditional English restaurant.

The little pub of the hotel. I checked this out in the evening however it was full of couples and there was no available table so I went back to the room and got back with internetting =)

A little bit of England: Scones, Jam and Clotted Cream at the Conservatory

When we arrived, the hotel welcomed us with coffee and tea. So I decided to extend this session to a late afternoon tea with scones, jam and clotted cream at the conservatory of the hotel.

It is very interesting when this kind of English affair has become known and typical in the Cameron Highlands. What I have been hearing from the grapevine is that locals all the way from Kuala Lumpur and the surrounding provinces flock here to have a taste of England. People, no need to take the transatlantic flight! I am sure British tourists are very amused to see something familiar from back home, haha.

The conservatory of the hotel and the scones here are very, very good.

The Hazelwell Family Suite

My parents took the annex room where the beautiful single poster beds were stationed which I totally adore, while I have no choice but to take the master bedroom. The TV is in the annex room and my mom and dad, of course, cannot live without BBC and CNN. This is not a joke. They are news monsters.

The annex room where my parents stayed:

The bathroom and toilet. Looks pretty and traditional, this does not have hot water though!

The mother is quick to turn on the TV for news =)

And this is my room, the master bedroom. No TV because it is in the annex room. Although I have a huge room, I kind of like the four poster beds in the annex room though…

The suite opens to the annex (see right) and and the bathroom to the left which has a door to the annex room.

I slept here comfortably and even opened the window to let in the cool temperature.

A very English Breakfast

Their breakfasts here at the Smokehouse Hotel are huge and are quite good as well. This is going to be brunch! I will let the pictures do the talking =)

Coffee, tea and orange juice. Croissants, toasted sandwich bread, English muffins, strawberry jam, butter and porridge or cereal with milk. Dad and I had porridge while mom cereal.

And then the main breakfast meal — English breakfast =) (ham, sausage, scrambled or sunny side-up eggs, mushrooms, grilled tomato, baked beans and hashed browns).

A very heavy breakfast to start our very long day. For sure we are not having lunch!

The Garden and the Flowers

One word: Gorgeous! It takes a lot of work and love to maintain a garden with many flowers.

My mom loved this orchid. I think it is called cattleya or cymbidium. The hotel seriously is in need of a renovation, look at those roof shingles.

I have a little confession to make. I was actually eyeing the Cameron Highlands Resort and The Lakehouse but unfortunately when I was about to book, all rooms were taken on both resorts. August weekends there are busy!

We were quite happy with the Smokehouse Hotel but would have been happier if the lows of the hotel (scroll up) were addressed for the sake of future guests.
