Charming garden restaurant in Tallinn: Lieb Restaurant and a Little Encounter with a Possessive Old Man

I have read great reviews about this restaurant serving good food and having a very cosy and fresh garden ambiance. When eating out, the quality and the taste of the food are both crucial to me, equally its ambiance as well. The latter in fact sits on the top of my must-have list and I usually base my decision to dine at a place on this. I am a highly visual person and my surroundings in a restaurant eventually play a great role in the enjoyment of my meal.

Lieb Restaurant (Lieb Resto ja Aed)
Website: Lieb Restaurant

The restaurant is located on Uus Street in the northern part beside the bicycle rental store and hostel. So here is my review and experience…

The restaurant has a few design themes running in every room. Here it reflects the Nordic design; simple lines, modern yet rugged and outdoorsy, incorporating wood with minimal finishing and rough-cut stones. During warmer days people tend to eat outside at the stylish and lush garden terrace or at the indoor dining adjacent to this.

This is one of their indoor dining areas:

The Scottish Club Room with early Georgian period style chairs and a few Scottish bagpipes on the wall.

The bar and the indoor dining adjacent to the garden terrace. The interior design is Victorian – Queen Anne/Georgian period style meets modern contemporary.

And voila! This is the outdoor garden terrace. It was full with clientele when I was there so the wait staff showed me the balcony terrace which I actually much preffered because I have my little privacy and  scenic views overlooking down to the garden. Just what I need!

The balcony terrace has a wooden trellis and skylight ceiling, a lattice design inspired wall and fitted out with wicker furniture. This is my table:

For my lunch aperitif I had a local cocktail drink recommended by the wait staff, a Poltsamaa Mimosa. This was very tangy and refreshing. Just perfect after the towers and fortifications walk I had.

Then the rye bread with nuts came accompanied with a very delicious creamy a bit salty butter.

My view down below the garden terrace…

And finally, my lunch arrived. Lightly grilled pike perch fish with pureed potato and cauliflower and green leafy salads. This was adorable and beautifully presented as well. Light yet filling.

The white wine that went with my lunch meal: a Garofoli – Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Wine from Italy. I remember this being smooth and a very good pair with my fish meal.

My rating for the food and experience at Leib Restaurant: 4.3 stars out of 5!

Highly recommended =)

Little Encounter with a Possessive Old Man

As I stepped out of the restaurant, this self-assured old man who is very well into his 70’s greeted me with a huge smile outside the door and asked if the food at the restaurant was good. I told him yes, and that he should try it upstairs in the garden seating area. He was friendly, perhaps too forthcoming, and so we chatted and I learned that he is from Norway and is on a Baltic Cruise, and before he could say anything about his other half, in came this Asian woman about my age (mid 40’s or she could be older) from across the street greeting me. She is a Filipina as well. What can I say, a very friendly and jolly couple indeed.

Then the Norwegian man asked me where my husband is. I told him I am travelling alone. Surprised, he blurted out whilst eyeing me up and down (Is it just me that I somewhat felt visually undressed? Ewww), ‘If I was your husband, I will never let you travel on your own!’

Huh. I was speechless, for a moment. I have no idea if I should laugh or be insulted? How should I respond? I mean, the man was quite serious with what he said.

Ah, the people you meet during your travels. They can be fun, entertaining, enlightening, inspiring but sometimes they can be disturbing and spooky as well, and a moral lesson in life and love in itself.

A little nugget of wisdom that has been said many times: When you love someone, you set them free.

Lieb Restaurant is located at the back of this bike rental shop and hostel. Entrances to the garden and the main restaurant on both side of this shop and hostel.
